Capoeira in Jericoacoara

Miss Bevan and I took lessons in Capoeira at an isolated beach town called Jericoacoara. Our teacher and other capoeiristas performed a "roda".

Here is the band preparing to begin. A drum is played, along with an instrument called a berimbau, made from a coconut, a piece of bamboo and a string.

The Capoeiristas start in a crouched position and shake hands. Then they cartwheel into the circle to begin their game. They then begin to "play", which involves kicking in different ways. The idea is that their partner dodges the kick. They can do this by ducking, cartwheeling away or performing a backflip.

Do you know any other martial arts? Are they similar to Capoeira? In what ways are they different?
